Cover Art and Interview for AAARG! Issue 10

Here's my cover for the new issue of the awesome French comics magazine, AAARG!
I figured if the magazine is called AAARG!, I may as well do something as colourful, loud, over-the-top and in-your-face as possible. But still sort of jolly.

AAARG! is kind of a modern day version of magazines like the eighties Heavy Metal, so I thought it'd fit to do something inspired by Liberatore's incredible 'Ranx Xerox' comic strip. There's also a healthy dollop of Brian Bolland in there.

Below is the original artwork without the graphics.
(Click on the images to enlarge)

Here's the B&W artwork:

...and the rough sketch, originally an unused idea for the cover of Your Days Are Numbered.
I don't like to let an idea go to waste.

There's also a whopping 9 page 'A to Z of Krent Able' interview inside.
Thanks to Donald Rasambo for the translation.

Below is an an unused alternate cover design (based on a rejected idea for Future Of The Left's 'How To Stop Your Brain In An Accident' lp). I'll probably recycle it for something else sometime. This isn't the last you've seen of this dumb idea!

You can order AAARG! here: Aaarg! SHOP
It's all in French obviously, but it really is bloody gorgeous - large scale, beautiful printing and design, and it comes with a huge fold-out poster of the cover. It's more like a book than a magazine. Plus the standard of the comics inside is tip-top. The French can draw so well, it's almost scary.

Dr. Cave Commission

Large (approx 2.5 x 3.5 foot) Dr. Cave commission for fellow comic artist, the talented Mr. Julian Hanshaw. I think he's going to have it in his studio, keeping an eye on him.

I thought I'd have a go with using charcoal on this one. Takes me back to my brief career as an art teacher, demonstrating charcoal techniques to OAP's in an art shop in the northern seaside town of Cleethorpes. Good times.

Jolly Lad

Got my hardback copy of John Doran's Jolly Lad the other day and it's a beauty, a very handsome book. One of those rare times I'm totally happy with how my work comes out in print. I did 7 illustrations for the inside, and Simon Fowler did the stunning hyper-detailed cover.

Want to buy it? I totally think you should. Allow me to provide you with a link to the publishers:

Jolly Lad Book Illustrations

I made 7 illustrations for the forthcoming book 'Jolly Lad' by John Doran, music journalist and editor of acclaimed music website The Quietus.

Jolly Lad is 'a memoir about recovery from alcoholism, habitual drug use and mental illness. It is also about the healing power of music, how memory defines us, the redemption offered by fatherhood and what it means to be working class'. Maybe it's just me, but I also found it to be pretty hilarious.

It's out in June, available as a paperback or Ltd Edition hardback, it's published by Strange Attractor and it features a beautiful cover by Simon Fowler. There's also a CD which comes with the hardback, feat. music from Nicky Wire (Manic Street Preachers), British Sea Power, Teeth Of The Sea, Grumbling Fur and others.

Sabbath Ov Thee Broken

I drew part of this cartoonist's art jam poster, along with top underground comic artists Junko Mizuno, Savage Pencil, Shaky Kane and many more, put together by Jason Atomic at Satanic Mojo comics.

Here's my bit on it's own, below. Hmmm..dunno know why they cropped out the Starship Enterprise - that's my favourite bit :(

You can buy a rather lovely print of the poster here: Sabbath Ov Thee Broken by SATANICMOJO on Etsy though I'd advise you to be quick. It's a Limited Edition of 70 and most of 'em have gone.

I'm pretty chuffed to have some comics in this beautiful French comics anthology, out now. The production standards on this baby are excellent, with a huge foldout poster of the cover (by Mezzo) inside. Big-ups also to my translator, Donald Rasambo.

Meanwhile... Issue 2

I've got a new 7 page comic strip in issue 2 of comics anthology Meanwhile..., out now.

You can get it in comic shops or buy it online from the publishers, Soaring Penguin, here:

There's some great stuff in it, like Gary Spencer Millidge's 'Strangehaven', an almost photo-realist continuing story about a mysterious village, and David Hine and Mark Stafford's creepy 'Bad Bad Place', as featured on the cover.
My story, 'INC.', is my first attempt at writing a longer story that isn't about taking the piss out of famous musicians. I guess you could call it Sci-fi. God knows.

Bleeding Cool included Meanwhile 2 in their Best 11 comics of 2014:

Here's a wee review from Down The Tubes:
Meanwhile… Back with a Bang, features more from David Hine, Mark Stafford, new Krent Able strip

..and here's another from the Forbidden Planet blog:
